Rapid tests: what are they for and which ones to choose?

In this period of intense attention and concern, Carlo De Giorgi continues with it’s awareness campaign for the right prevention.

The need to quickly track infections caused by SARS-CoV-2 has become one of the crucial measures to detect and break the chain of transmission of the virus.

The reference molecular test (RT-PCR) for the diagnosis of SARS-CoV-2 takes a few hours to obtain a result and is performed in highly qualified laboratories with specialized personnel. The quick texts are able to offer the result in a few minutes, simplifying the identification of cases, the isolation and tracking of infected people.

Important: Rapid tests are not a substitute for molecular testing, but they can offer important and obtainable information because they are easy to purchase.

The type of rapid tests

In response to the growing pandemic and the difficulty of carrying out molecular laboratory tests in a short time, we are collaborating with leading international manufacturers in the field of in vitro diagnostics.

Antigenic Nasopharyngeal

COVID-19 Antigen Rapid Test (CLUNGENE®)

With a rapid diagnosis of just 15 minutes, the COVID-19 Antigenic Rapid Test (CLUNGENE®) kit is a professional test based on the rapid lateral flow immunochromatographic method for qualitative detection of SARS-CoV- antigen. 2 at the nasopharyngeal level.

Produced by the international company Hangzhou Clongene Biotech Co., Ltd. specialized in in vitro diagnostics, the test guarantees high accuracy in the detection of samples.

What’s it for?

The antigenic test serves for the qualitative search for viral proteins (antigens) that are identified when the virus is actively replicating.
It can help by diagnosing an infection in progress and the material used is the nasopharyngeal swab, performed by healthcare personnel.

For a more complete diagnosis it’s necessary to continue with the molecular test, whatever the result.

Antigenic salivary

Novel Coronavirus Antigeni Detection Kit (Colloidal Gold) NEWGENE

Novel Coronavirus Antigen Detection Kit (Colloidal Gold) NEWGENE is a rapid test based on the lateral flow immunochromatographic method for the qualitative detection of Sars-Cov-2 antigen (nucleocapsid) in sputum samples.

The rapid salivary test allows for a first level screening of the population. Novel Coronavirus Antigen Detection Kit (Colloidal Gold) NEWGENE is a rapid test that allows to identify positive subjects, which will be further confirmed by a thorough diagnosis with the molecular test (RT-PCR).

What’s it for?

The salivary test serves for the qualitative search of viral proteins (antigens) that are identified when the virus is actively replicating.
We recommend it because it’s able to diagnose an infection in progress and uses sputum (sputum) collected with the support of health personnel.

For a more complete diagnosis it’s necessary to continue with the molecular test, whatever the result.

Serological

COVID-19 IgG / IgM Rapid Test Cassette (WB / S / P) CLUNGENE®

COVID-19 IgG / IgM Rapid Test (WB / S / P) CLUNGENE® is useful for detecting the presence of antibodies developed by the immune system in case of SARS-CoV-2 virus infection. The antibodies identified are IgM immunoglobulins (the first to be produced in case of infection) and IgG (which remain active when the IgM level drops).

What’s it for?

The serological test is used for the qualitative detection of specific antibodies in the blood (IgM and IgG) present in response to the infection caused by SARS-CoV-2. It’s recommended for diagnosing a recent or past infection by collecting a drop of blood with a lancing device from a healthcare professional.

The CLUNGENE® COVID-19 IgG / IgM Rapid Test Cassette (WB / S / P) serological test can also be useful in the following situations:

  • to check if COVID-19 has been contracted in the past but a test has never been carried out;
  • to undergo a medical procedure in a hospital or clinic, especially if you have been positively diagnosed with COVID-19 in the past;
  • to donate plasma or a part of the blood that contains antibodies that can help treat others who have severe cases of COVID-19 (only for people who have had the virus in the past).

The molecular test must be continued to evaluate the possible active presence of the virus.
The effectiveness of the tests depends on several factors, including the time from the onset of the disease, the concentration of virus in the sample, the quality of the sample collected and the way in which the test is processed.
